Expert Series: Trajectory of the Chinese economy – will the fundamentals of
growth save the day?
12:00 – 2:00pm. The American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong (AmCham HK) is pleased to host Dr. Nicholas R. Lardy, Anthony M. Solomon Senior Fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics (PIIE).
Referencing to China's third quarter GDP of 6.9%, the lowest from the peak since the global financial crisis, the China specialist will share his insights on the fundamentals of the country's economic growth. Dr.
Lardy will outline four drivers contributing to the steady pace for the transition: wage growth being ahead of GDP growth, increased access to the social safety net, and the 'upper-level-income" per capita (as termed by the World Bank) and the demand for services that leads to further growth of urban employment. The slowdown may in fact point to a more stable, overall trajectory of the Chinese economy when factors behind and beyond the GDP figures are being taken into account of.
