The relationship between the dragon and the eagle has rarely been more stressed and turbulent than at present and over the past few years. What factors have contributed to the sea change in US thinking about China? How fundamental and lasting are the perceptual and policy changes likely to be? Has a new Cold War begun? If the United States is now embarked on a long-term policy of competition and confrontation, what should be the guidelines for such a posture? What could change the negative dynamics? How to manage this complex bilateral relationship?

In this lecture, Professor David Shambaugh who is a China expert, will present what the China policy debates "inside the Beltway" in Washington have been and where they are likely headed.
