J. Norwell Coquillard

President and Chairman at Enactus China, Shanghai

J. Norwell Coquillard has 30 years of business experience in Asia. He currently serves as the Chairman and President of Enactus China, the China operations of the U.S. based non-profit Enactus which operates in 36 countries. Enactus equips and empowers university students to use their entrepreneurial spirit to create social enterprise projects that help improve the standard of living of disadvantaged groups. The Enactus community incorporates the students, university professionals, corporations who support the organization’s work and members of the impacted communities. Enactus China is now the second largest program in the organization after the United States. Enactus China includes 210 universities with approximately 12,500 students in the program. Mr., Coquillard has been successful to more than triple the number of supporting companies involved in the program and increase it’s funding over five times in his three years with the organization.

In addition to his role with Enactus Mr. Coquillard also serves as a senior counselor for the Strategic Advisory and Communications firm APCO Worldwide as well as serving as the Asia CEO Forum Chairman for China for the firm IMA Asia. Prior to assuming these roles he was the chairman and president of Cargill Investment (China) Limited which is the China operating company for Cargill Incorporated of the United States in China.

Coquillard started his career in agribusiness in 1978 as a grain trader with Cargill, Incorporated, the world’s largest grain trader and processor. Before coming to China in 1998, Coquillard served as the country manager for Cargill operations in Japan and Korea from 1984 until 1997.

Coquillard served as the Chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai for calendar years 2008 and 2009. In addition to his role as chairman he served as an officer of the Chamber in 2003, 2004, and 2007. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Chamber’s Food, Agriculture and Beverage Committee.

Coquillard is a graduate of Dartmouth College in the United States. During his university days Coquillard studied in Singapore and Indonesia. He has travelled extensively throughout Asia both in his student and business roles.
