Could there be a more intriguing East-meets-West story than the introduction of chocolate— that very symbol of indulgence —to legendarily austere China?
Thirty years ago nearly the entire population of China had never tasted chocolate. But over the next twenty-five years, five icons of Western business slugged it out to see which would become the Emperor of Chocolate in China.
Based on his book Chocolate Fortunes: The Battle for the Hearts, Minds, and Wallets of China's Consumers (AMACOM, 2010), author Lawrence Allen key-notes the upcoming AmCham-hosted Chocolate Fortunes event. Allen offers an insiders, blow-by-blow account of the quarter-century battle waged amongst the five titans of chocolate—Hershey, Nestlé, Cadbury, Mars, and Ferrero Rocher—for the hearts, minds and taste buds of China's new consumer class.
A former executive for two of the 'Big Five" chocolate companies in China, Allen presents a gripping business story wrapped up in the intriguing tale of East meeting West through the introduction of an icon of the western world's decadence and self-indulgence.
Allen reviews each company's history, hopes, strategies, successes and failures, and the trials they face as they attempt to dominate the market of an enigmatic and still-developing economy. The session also probes the economic, political, and cultural conditions that have given rise to a seemingly insatiable new consumer market in China.
More broadly, Chocolate Fortunes examines the unique opportunities and challenges inherent in China's overall consumer market, with lessons for anyone doing business in this dynamic, complex, and continually evolving market.
