Ross Matthews

President & CEO of Starr International Insurance (Asia) Ltd

Ross Matthews is President & CEO of Starr International Insurance (Asia) Ltd., and President of Starr Underwriting Agents (Asia) Ltd., member companies of Starr Companies based in New York.   Mr. Matthews recently served as President & CEO of Dazhong Insurance Company of China, based in Shanghai, following Starr’s strategic investment in this company in early 2011.  
Mr. Matthews began his insurance career in New York in 1979 and was assigned to work in Japan in 1980 where he served in a series of underwriting and management positions for three US-based international insurance companies.
Mr. Matthews joined AIG Companies in 1989 in Japan and served in senior Asian regional management positions based in Japan, Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan.   In 2003 he was named AIU Regional President – Greater China.   Mr. Matthews was responsible for the expansion of AIU’s China operations between 1997 and 2005 including AIG’s investment in the People Insurance Company of China (PICC) in 2003.   Mr. Matthews also served as Executive Vice President, AIU Global Major Accounts Practice based in New York and returned to Asia as Chairman of AIG General Insurance Taiwan in 2006.   Mr. Matthews returned to Hong Kong in 2007 and joined C.V. Starr.
Mr. Matthews has been an active member of the Hong Kong insurance industry for 17 years.   He served in the General Insurance Council (GIC) of Hong Kong Federation of Insurers (HKFI) from 1995 to 2004, again in 2007.   He was elected Chairman of GIC for 1998-1999 and also served on the Governing Committee of the HKFI from 1997 - 2004.   Mr. Matthews has been an active member of the American Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM) in Hong Kong since 1995 and served as a Governor between 2004 and 2011.   He also has been a member of AMCHAM in Japan, Korea, Shanghai and South China.
Mr. Matthews is a graduate of Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A . with a BA degree in Economics and History.   He has also studied at the College of Insurance in New York.
