But while the overall relationship has deepened significantly since normalization over three decades ago, the U.S.- China military-to-military relationship still lags far behind its economic and diplomatic counterparts.
This relationship has largely been shaped by suspicion and frustration, and a lack of consistent, reliable communication between the two militaries reinforces such sentiments. Cultivating communication and mutual understanding between the militaries of the United States and China is essential for fostering the cooperation between the two nations necessary to address the world's most difficult issues.
