Visit to State-of-the-art Sludge Treatment Facility
9:00am - 1:00pm . The new Sludge Treatment Facility (STF), located in Nim Wan of Tuen Mun, is an important step in shaping Hong Kong's waste-to-energy strategy and is specifically designed to address the unique waste challenges in the city. 'Sludge" is the semi-solid by-product of sewage treatment. In Hong Kong, the government sewage treatment plants produce 1,100 tonnes of sludge per day in 2015, and the amount will continue to increase due to growing population, sewerage upgrading and the commissioning of Stage 2A of the Harbour Area Treatment Scheme for improving the water quality of the Victoria Harbour. The STF is a sustainable solution for the handling of up to 2,000 tonnes of sludge.
The STF features a variety of advanced technologies combined into a single complex: sludge treatment, power generation, seawater desalination, wastewater treatment and flue gas treatment . It also features various recreational, educational and ecological facilities to demonstrate to the public the benefits of sustainable waste management.
The STF is more than just a sludge treatment plant. It is one of the most technically advanced facilities of its kind in the world, an iconic landmark that Hong Kong people can be proud of, and a place to learn and enjoy about sustainable use of resources.
