The AmCham Apparel & Footwear Committee visited Cambodia twice in 2015 to discuss their concerns on the competitive state of the garment sector with industry partners.
Following additional research done by Better Factories Cambodia, the government has recognised the need to develop a more strategic vision for the industry focussed on addressing its weaknesses as well as taking advantage of the opportunities. On request of the Prime Minister Hun Sen, the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) since formed a technical team that is responsible for driving the formulation of this strategy. Since early this year, the technical team has worked on additional economic analysis and are now complementing this data with interviews with international buyers and suppliers.
The technical team expects to finalise the strategic vision in the second half of 2017. The formulation process involves different moments of consultations with the key actors in the industry, including unions, the relevant ministries (including Labour and Commerce), employers, suppliers and brands. As part of this process, the technical team, Garment Manufacturers Association in Cambodia (GMAC) and Better Factories Cambodia (BFC) will be in Hong Kong on 16 and 17 May to meet with suppliers based out of Hong Kong and brands.
The purpose of the meeting with the AmCham Apparel & Footwear Committee is to follow up on the conversation and discussions that took place in 2015, and represents a key moment for the Cambodia delegation to hear from brands that source from Cambodia how they view the competitive state of the industry, what is necessary to strengthen its attractiveness and what the priorities are that need to be addressed in the garment sectorAfter a short introduction of the purpose of their visit and work done so far, the Cambodian ministry of economy and finance will lead the discussion with the AmCham Apparel & Footwear Committee around a set of key questions on the future of the sector in Cambodia.
