We are delighted to invite you to an intimate lunch with the inspirational Mellody Hobson, President of Ariel Investments, a Director of Starbucks Corporation and The Estée Lauder Companies Inc. and recently appointed as Chair of the Economic Club of Chicago.

The lunch will be on Friday, September 1 and is being generously hosted for AmCham by PwC. It will be a fireside chat facilitated by Tara Joseph, President of The American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong.

About Mellody Hobson
Mellody is the first African-American woman to chair the Economic Club of Chicago, and the second woman in a row to chair the 90-year-old organization. She was also named to Time Magazine’s annual list of the one hundred most influential people in the world. Mellody is a regular contributor and analyst on finance, the markets and economic trends for CBS News. She also contributes weekly money tips on the Tom Joyner Morning Show and pens a column for Black Enterprise magazine.

Sheryl Sandberg, the Facebook Chief Operating Officer, credits a comment Hobson made with inspiring her to write her best-seller, Lean In. Sheryl told Vanity Fair about her views on Mellody in a feature, “My life was altered by meeting her, and that’s not something I say lightly. She is such a big part of my path taken.     Mellody Hobson is President of Ariel Investments who is responsible for firm-wide management and strategic planning, overseeing all operations outside of research and portfolio management. Additionally, she serves as chairman of the board of trustees for Ariel Investment Trust. Beyond her work at Ariel, Mellody has become a nationally recognized voice on financial literacy and investor education. She is a regular contributor and analyst on finance, the markets and economic trends for CBS News. She also contributes weekly money tips on the Tom Joyner Morning Show and pens a column for Black Enterprise magazine. As a passionate advocate for investor education, she is a spokesperson for the Ariel/Hewitt Study: 401(k) Plans in Living Color and the Ariel Black Investor Survey, both of which examine investing patterns among minorities.

    Mellody is a director of The Estée Lauder Companies Inc. and Starbucks Corporation. Her community outreach includes serving as chairman of After School Matters, a non-profit that provides Chicago teens with high-quality, out-of-school time programs. She is chair of The Economic Club of Chicago’s board of directors, a board member of The Chicago Public Education Fund, George Lucas Education Foundation, Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, and Sundance Institute, where she has been appointed emeritus trustee. She is also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and serves on the executive committee of the Investment Company Institute’s board of governors. In 2015, Mellody was named to Time Magazine’s annual list of the one hundred most influential people in the world.

    Mellody earned her AB from Princeton’s Woodrow Wilson School of International Relations and Public Policy. She has also received honorary doctorate degrees from Howard University, St. Mary’s College and the University of Southern California.

    Tara Joseph is the President of AmCham Hong Kong. In her 22 years as journalist, she has reported on hundreds of the world’s most important and high profile news stories including Russia’s financial crisis, Myanmar’s emergence from virtual isolation, China's rise on the world stage and the Beijing Olympics to name a few. Earlier in her career, Tara was the editor and main presenter of Reuters Financial Television based in London, and covered emerging markets and G7 economic issues. She has twice served as President of the Hong Kong Foreign Correspondents’ Club in Hong Kong, one of the world’s largest press clubs.
