Hong Kong has long been compared against other leading Asian cities regarding its competitiveness as a hub for start-ups. The potential contribution of high growth startups to a city's economy can be substantial – in the U.S., high-growth firms account for up to 50% of new jobs created*.


Hong Kong has seen substantial growth in its startup ecosystem over the past few years and its tech scene is thriving. Results of InvestHK's latest Startup Profiling Survey show a 16 per cent increase in start-ups this past year to 2,300 entities; and a 21 per cent gain in start-up jobs to more than 6,300 jobs. The Government is affording a high priority to developing this sector and in Chief Executive's last Policy Address and Financial Secretary's Budget a number of different initiatives and funding schemes were announced to help realise that vision.


InvestHK Director General Stephen Phillips will give AmCham members more insights and details about the city's progress toward becoming a leading hub for innovation. He will be joined by two startups – MobiJuce and Mass Branded – to share stories of growing pains and successes of their Hong Kong ventures.

He's an up-and-coming photographer whose work has appeared in publications and online in Fashionably Male, DNA, Attitude, HUF Magazine, Narcissus, Kaltblut, Plug Magazine and Time Out.

    Alexis Wong is the founder and CEO of MobiJuce Limited, which is a location-based user database platform with power, data and promotions on-the-go to mobile users. MobiJuce was founded in 2017 and recently debut in November 2017. In Just four months’ time, MobiJuce already gained respectable traction reaching well over 500,000 usage minutes with consumers. Under Ms. Wong’s leadership, MobiJuce is heading to cover all of Hong Kong and expanding across APAC region within 2018.

    Prior to MobiJuce, Ms. Wong founded and was CEO for Blinq, an O2O user-based marketing platform combining pop-up shops inside metro systems and online-to-offline marketing for top major global brands. Within 2 years, Blinq operated in metro systems of four major cities across China, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, and Nanjing, developed a 4.5 million membership base, and serviced over 150 brands such as Coca Cola, Pepsi Cola, Perrier, Pfizer, China Unicom, Suntory, Citic, and Bank of Shanghai, etc.

    Previously, Ms. Wong founded and was the CEO for Prometheus Partners and led many cross-border advisory and M&A initiatives between China and US, including the Huawei bid for a USD $5 billion cellular network contract with Sprint, China Ministry of Railway’s California high speed rail initiative, CRCC/China Development Bank’s USD $1 billion infrastructure financing in the US. Ms. Wong also founded AGI Capital Group, Inc. (now Avant Group) in 1998 in San Francisco, which is now a multi-faceted real estate development company that has overseen more than USD $2 billion of development and investment opportunities with CalPERS. She continues to be non-executive Chairman of Avant Group. Since 1999, Ms. Wong led a number of investments in real estate, technology, hospitality, and Internet of Things.

    Ms. Wong is an Advisor to Caidao Capital Limited, a multi-faceted advisory and investment management company specializing in corporate finance, wealth management and real estate investment with coverage in U.S., Germany, and Asia Pacific.

    Over the years, Ms. Wong has been appointed to various prominent state boards and commissions in California, namely, the California Real Estate Advisory Board, the COIN Advisory Board overseeing insurance industry, California World Trade Commission, Asian Pacific Islander Affairs Commission, and the California Small Business Advisory Board. Ms. Wong has been recognized by the San Francisco Business Times as one of the “Top 100 Most Influential Women in Business” and “49 Most Influential People in San Francisco,” and one of the “Top 50 Asian American in Business in the U.S.” by the Asian Economic Development Center in New York. In June 2007, Ms. Wong was recognized by the California State Assembly for “Excellence in Business” in the State of California as the awardee of the year.

    Ms. Wong graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelors Degree in Marketing and MBA in International Management from Golden Gate University.

    Stephen Phillips is the Director-General of Investment Promotion at Invest Hong Kong (InvestHK), the Government Department responsible for attracting and facilitating foreign direct investment into Hong Kong.

    Mr. Phillips has served in senior positions in a number of private and public organisations. He lived and worked in Hong Kong from 1989 to 2004 holding senior investment banking positions with Deutsche and BZW/Barclays Capital before co-founding a Hong Kong-based group of companies providing IT, financial and consultancy services across Asia. In 2004, Mr. Phillips joined UK Trade & Investment (now the UK’s Department of International Trade) before becoming the Chief Executive of the China Britain Business Council in 2006, as well as Chairman of the EU China Business Association.

    Mr. Phillips holds a BSc in Chemistry and Law from the University of Exeter.
