Climate change is an immediate threat to humanity that demands swift, decisive action.
Fires. Droughts. Floods. Hurricanes. Rising seas. Climate impacts are being felt all around the world and are on track to get much worse. Every year of delay and every tenth of a degree temperature rise matters. The next few years are the last window we have to steer the world in a better and safer direction.
Currently, total greenhouse gas emissions from textiles production, at 1.2 billion tonnes annually, are more than those of all international flights and maritime shipping combined. By some estimates, textile sector emissions are expected to rise by more than 60 percent by 2030. ^
Addressing climate change requires transformational changes to how we power our homes and factories and build our cities to how we feed our families and move around. Yet governments, businesses and people have to participate and make the deep structural economic and societal shifts happen.
WWF sees an imperative need to act by bringing stakeholders together at local, national and international levels to advance the deep structural shifts necessary to address climate change. Science Based Targets Initiative, helps hundreds of the world's largest companies set ambitious climate targets. And through the well-designed project "Making Zero Impact Fashionable", WWF-Hong Kong helps companies and supply chains to measure, manage, and report their greenhouse gas emissions reduction, supporting the implementation of the Paris Agreement on climate change.
This event is a collaboration between World Wide Fund for Nature Hong Kong (WWF-Hong Kong) and World Resources Institute (WRI). Hong Kong's first sustainability support programme for the fashion industry "Making Zero Impact Fashionable" is a two-year project spearheaded by WWF-Hong Kong and HSBC. The project and the Science Based Target Initiative will be introduced to the senior leaders of participating companies who desire to play a major role in driving down global greenhouse gas emissions and boost their competitive advantage in the transition to the low-carbon economy.
