After 12 rounds of senior-level negotiations between the US and China and signs of initial progress, the gap between the US and Chinese positions seems to be widening, and the prospects for further escalation of the frictions seem to be increasing. What are the underlying goals of each country in these negotiations, what obstacles stand in the way of their reaching agreement, and how are events over the coming months likely to impact the environment for American companies doing business in China and Chinese companies doing business in the US?

Tim Stratford will share his perspective on these questions, drawing upon his experience as a former US official responsible for trade negotiations with China, insights gained from ongoing discussions with current US and Chinese trade officials, and input he is receiving from members of the American Chamber of Commerce in China as its current Chair.
